The International Space Station (ISS) is a multinational, habitable satellite that orbits Earth at an altitude of approximately 400 kilometers. It serves as a research laboratory, supporting scientific studies across a wide range of disciplines, including biology, physics, astronomy, and materials science. The ISS is also a hub for international cooperation in space exploration, involving space agencies from the United States (NASA), Russia (Roscosmos), Europe (ESA), Japan (JAXA), and Canada (CSA). For over two decades, the International Space Station (ISS) has acted as a cornerstone of these objectives, advancing our knowledge of the world around us. However, as the ISS approaches the end of its operational life in 2030, NASA faces significant challenges in deciding whether to progress with a controlled deorbit in 2031. Aging infrastructure, increasing risks from orbital debris, and budgetary constraints complicate these efforts, while the transition to commercially operated space destinations adds another layer of complexity. Addressing these challenges is critical to preserving the legacy of the ISS and ensuring the continuity of human presence in low Earth orbit; countries must decide how they will contribute to preserving the ISS or enacting a transition into solely commercial space stations. Your task as a delegate of the nations participating in space agencies is to weigh the costs of maintaining the ISS with the benefits it has provided to society.
