Over the course of history, countless examples have highlighted the indispensable significance of the freedom of speech to the functionality of society. From the Cold War to the Dark Ages, countless wars, revolts, and uprisings occurred due to the suppression of speech and religion, and although there have been massive strides in ensuring the protection of these rights, the stifling of the press in today's society has grown more prevalent than ever before. Freedom of the press is a cornerstone of democratic societies and a fundamental human right contained in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights1. A free press serves as protection, ensuring transparency, accountability, and the flow of information to the public. However, journalists around the globe face threats ranging from censorship and harassment to imprisonment and murder. The protection of the press is not merely a media issue but a human rights imperative.
